What the Colombia student visa is

Colombia’s visa for studying is the type V visa in its student category. It lets you live in Colombia legally with study as the declared purpose of your stay, enrolled at a recognized institution with a real class load. It is not a tourist stamp with extra steps and not a work permit. In practice it changes how your months in Colombia feel. Instead of watching a tourist clock, you settle in: an apartment instead of hostels, a routine instead of a countdown, and a Spanish level that climbs because you show up to class every week.

Who needs one

Not everyone. Travelers from many countries enter Colombia visa-free as tourists for up to 90 days, and that entry can often be extended, which covers a vacation with some Spanish classes in it. The student visa is for the other plan, the six-month-plus chapter where Spanish is the point and not the souvenir. The acceptance letter

Your application is built around one proof: a recognized institution has accepted you into a real program. In Colombia that means a licensed school. Mister Fox Spanish School is a licensed ETDH institution (Secretaría de Educación de Pereira, Resolution 6784 of 2022) with a registered Spanish program from A1 to C1, aligned with the CEFR (Resolution 005093 of July 23, 2024), and we are listed in SIET, the Ministry of Education’s public registry. So we issue your carta de aceptación ourselves, as the institution that will teach you. Getting it is simple: you reserve your Visa Program with a deposit, the letter gets moving, and you upload it with the rest of your file when you apply.

The process, step by step

1. Pick your Visa Program: 40 hours of classes per month, about 10 hours a week, for 1 to 15 months, in Pereira, in Medellín (Laureles or Belén) or live online. Take the free level test first so you start in the right class.
2. Reserve with a 15% deposit. That is what triggers your acceptance letter, and the deposit counts toward your program. Your first package gets −10% off on selected plans, applied automatically.
3. Receive your carta de aceptación, issued by the school, with your program and its study load stated on it.
4. Assemble your file at home: passport, bank statements, photos, plus apostilles and official translations where required.
5. File the application online with the Colombian authorities, upload your documents and pay the fees they set.
6. Wait for the decision. Timelines vary and belong to the authorities, so start your classes online in the meantime instead of watching an inbox.
7. Visa in hand: book the flight, land and walk into class.

The study load

A student visa presumes you are studying: a consistent, verifiable class intensity, not a class when you feel like it. Our Visa Programs are built for that, with structured CEFR levels, tracked attendance and an official certificate when you complete each level. Classes run on weekdays, with Saturday mornings in Laureles and Pereira, so a serious schedule still fits around a real life. This is also where cutting corners backfires. A program bought only as paperwork, one you never plan to attend, weakens your file and wastes the best part of the arrangement: a schedule you cannot negotiate with.

Where you study

Three campuses and one online classroom, and they mix. Pereira (Carrera 11B #1A-40, La Rebeca) is the school’s licensed home base in the heart of the coffee region. In Medellín we teach in Laureles (Carrera 76 #41-07) and in Belén (Cl. 32F #74B-136). We also teach live online, with the same teachers and the same method, which is how most visa students begin: they start from home, land in Colombia and continue in person without changing teacher or level. If you want housing near a campus, we help with that too; students who live close to their classroom simply speak more Spanish per day.

Start before you land

You don’t have to wait for the visa to start learning. Online classes run live with the teachers who will greet you on campus, so you can start from your living room, arrive with the basics done and spend your first week in Colombia ordering food in Spanish rather than meeting the verb ser for the first time. It also lowers the risk of the whole plan: a free trial class of 30 to 45 minutes tells you whether we are your school before any money moves. We are a school, not a law firm: rules evolve and cases differ, so verify current requirements with official Colombian sources. The mistakes that cost the most

• Waiting for the perfect moment to start the paperwork. The acceptance letter is the document the rest of your file has to match, and it can exist this week.
• Doing apostilles last. They are issued only in your home country, and remembering that from Colombia is expensive and slow.
• Paying an agency to get you a letter. Your carta must come from your school, and ours comes from us, because we are the licensed institution.
• Booking non-refundable flights before the decision. The authorities set the pace, not your airline.
• Treating the program as decoration. The study load is real, and it is also the entire point of coming.
