• Basic salsa is genuinely learnable in a few sessions — the fundamental step is a pattern, not a talent.
• Nobody is watching you. Everyone is having too much fun to audit your footwork.
• Being bad at it is socially magnetic here: locals love teaching, and “teach the foreigner to dance” is a beloved party game you benefit from.
• You do not need a partner — classes and socials rotate pairs, which doubles as a friend-making machine.
• The bar for delight is low: master the basic step and a simple turn, and you can enjoy 90% of nights out in this country.

Your first month on the dance floor

1. Week 1: one beginner class at Euforia. Learn the basic step. Feel ridiculous. This is universal and temporary.
2. Week 2: second class plus a school salsa social — low stakes, familiar faces, music louder than your self-consciousness.
3. Week 3: add the simple turn. Congratulations, you now know enough for most of the night.
4. Week 4: a real salsa night out with your parche. Someone films you. You do not hate the footage. Welcome to Colombia.

And the etiquette question everyone is too shy to ask: inviting someone to dance is completely normal here — a smile and “¿bailamos?” is the entire protocol, and a polite no is just as normal and carries zero drama. The dance floor is public infrastructure, not an audition.

The weekly rhythm that changes your whole stay

Here is the pattern our happiest students fall into: Spanish classes in the morning for structure, a salsa class or two per week at Euforia for joy, and our school activities — intercambios, salsa socials, group outings — to glue it together. Within a month you have a routine, a crew and a standing Friday plan. That combination is why students who came “for three weeks” are still here a year later, suspiciously good at dancing.

Studying in Pereira instead?
